TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In a move to safeguard its image ahead of the upcoming inner-party position elections, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman and Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) has issued a directive urging candidates and their teams to refrain from attacking each other on Wednesday (May 22).

Chairman Lai dispatched letters from the central party office to local party branches, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive and united front.

The correspondence comes as the DPP prepares for its party position elections set for May 26, with some party branch chairperson races heating up.

The central party office's letter highlighted the need for candidates and their teams to remain rational, peaceful, and harmonious, seeking maximum support through positive appeals. It specifically cautioned against the use of false accusations to attack opponents, warning that such actions could damage the party's image.

Registration for the local party branch chairperson elections has concluded, revealing a mixed competitive landscape.

In Taipei City, New Taipei City, and Taoyuan City, only one person registered to run in each of the nine counties and cities, indicating a lack of competition. Conversely, in Tainan City and Kaohsiung City, the races appear much more contested.

This strategic initiative by Chairman Lai underscores the DPP's commitment to unity and positive campaigning as it navigates the internal elections. With the party's image at stake, the leadership's call for decorum and unity is a critical step toward ensuring a cohesive approach to the upcoming electoral challenges.
