TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Chief of the General Staff Admiral Mei Chia-shu (參謀總長梅家樹上將) emphasized the importance of realistic nighttime training during this year's Han Kuang military exercise (漢光實兵演習) on Thursday (July 11). He stressed that such training is crucial for Taiwan's defensive operations.

Mei visited the ROCS Su Ao (DDG-1802) (海軍蘇澳軍艦) to engage with service members, address their queries about the Han Kuang exercise and analyze decision-making processes, according to the Military News Agency (軍聞社). He highlighted the necessity of "continuous scenarios," particularly nighttime training, to ensure that troops understand the ongoing nature of defensive combat.

Mei pointed out that realistic training is a key objective of this year's Han Kuang exercise. He urged units to strive to achieve three aspects: "maximization," "real-time," and "on-site training."

He remarked that some nighttime drills were simplified due to high risks in the past but insisted that combat knows no time of day. The military must plan for safety while meeting "real-time" requirements based on potential enemy actions, which will reveal the troops' capabilities and limitations.

The admiral noted that Taiwan's defensive operations have two significant advantages: "pre-positioning in the battlefield" and "familiarity with the terrain." He urged the military to leverage these strengths through solid "on-site training."

Mei's remarks underscore the importance of adapting training to realistic combat scenarios to enhance the military's readiness and effectiveness.
