TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Donald Trump's recent comments that Taiwan should pay for its defense have sparked concern among Taiwanese business leaders and political observers.

Pegatron Chairman Tung Tzu-hsien (童子賢) expressed his worries on Wednesday (July 17) about whether future U.S. presidents will understand Taiwan's significance. Tung emphasized the importance of respecting U.S. elections and noted that Trump mentioned raising tariffs and withdrawing troops from various countries.

Tung also wondered whether the elected president would recognize Taiwan's crucial and positive role on the global stage regardless of the candidate. He stressed that Taiwan remains a friendly, proactive, and contributive player internationally.

Wu Tung-liang (吳東亮), chairman of the Chinese National Association of Industry and Commerce (CNAIC, 工商協進會), voiced concerns that Trump's presidency could trigger protectionism. Wu warned that this might delay global interest rate cuts and lead to inflation and tariff wars.

Acer Chairman Jason Chen (陳俊聖) revealed that Acer has studied the issue internally but refrained from public discussion due to the many uncertainties involved. Chen's cautious stance reflects the broader apprehension within the Taiwanese business community regarding the potential impacts of Trump's policies.

As the U.S. election approaches, Taiwanese leaders and businesses continue to monitor developments closely, hoping for a favorable outcome that acknowledges Taiwan's strategic importance.
