TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) announced on Friday (Aug. 16) that Taiwan remains under a low-pressure system, bringing increased cloud cover and the likelihood of short, intense rain showers.

Central and southern regions, along with the outlying islands of Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu, can expect intermittent showers or thunderstorms, with a higher chance of significant rainfall in the south.

The forecast indicates scattered rainfall in northern areas from early morning to noon. After midday, localized thunderstorms are expected across Taiwan, with the potential for heavy or torrential rain in northern and mountainous regions. The CWA warned of strong convection, lightning, and gusty winds accompanying these storms, with some areas experiencing rain into the evening.

Temperatures will range from 29 to 33 degrees Celsius across the island, creating a muggy atmosphere when it is not raining. The CWA advises residents to stay hydrated during outdoor activities to cope with the heat.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Ampil was located approximately 2,070 kilometers east-northeast of Taipei at 2 a.m. on Friday. Moving north toward the southeastern waters of Japan, the typhoon poses no threat to Taiwan's weather.
