TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The National Highway Police Bureau (HPB, 國道公路警察局) received 34 new BMW 520i patrol cars on Thursday (Sept. 19), aimed at enhancing law enforcement efficiency and replacing older equipment, some of which had been in use for over seven years.

The bureau invested NT$68 million in the procurement, with each BMW costing NT$2 million. The acquisition process began in October 2023 as part of the "Police Vehicle Enhancement Program" (充實警用車輛方案). This year’s focus on the BMW series reflects the bureau’s strategy of equipping officers with durable, high-performance vehicles.

The vehicles will be distributed across nine squads within the bureau. HPB Commissioner Liao Mei-Ling (廖美鈴) urged officers to prioritize "maintenance over repair, repair over replacement" to extend the service life of the equipment and keep the patrol cars in optimal condition.

The HPB is responsible for maintaining traffic order on the highways, investigating violations, and handling law enforcement duties across Taiwan’s highway system.
