TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) urged city departments to strengthen typhoon preparedness during a municipal meeting on Tuesday (Oct. 29). The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) reported that Typhoon Kong-Rey (康芮) will approach southern Taiwan on Wednesday, with its greatest impact on Taipei expected on Thursday and Friday.

Chiang directed the Public Works Department, Department of Environmental Protection, Department of Transportation, Department of Urban Development, and district offices to prepare for potential damage from fallen trees, signage, and traffic signals. He emphasized the need for the Department of Environmental Protection to clear leaves from drainage systems to prevent blockages.

The Department of Urban Development and the Department of Labor were tasked with ensuring construction sites implement wind and fall protection measures for tower cranes. Taipei's Disaster Response Office noted that Typhoon Kong-Rey might become the first autumn typhoon to make landfall in November in 57 years, prompting the activation of a level-three emergency response center.

Officials advised residents to stay informed about the typhoon's progress and implement safety measures. The office also warned against activities in mountainous and river areas for safety. As Typhoon Kong-Rey nears, the Taipei City Government continues to monitor the situation closely, urging residents to heed warnings and stay safe during this potentially historic weather event.
