TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taiwan High Court (台灣高等法院) on Friday (Nov. 8) rejected Taipei City Councilor Angela Ying's (應曉薇) appeal, extending her detention by two months from Oct. 29 and prohibiting visits and correspondence. Prosecutors requested the extension after Ying's alleged involvement in the Core Pacific City (京華城) case, where she reportedly accepted a NT$47.4 million bribe from Core Pacific Group Chairman Sheen Ching-jing (沈慶京).

The court cited significant suspicion of Ying violating the "Anti-Corruption Act" (貪污治罪條例) by accepting bribes, emphasizing the substantial risk of her fleeing, colluding with accomplices, or tampering with witnesses. It maintained that the reasons for her detention remained valid. The court considered the number of people involved and the witnesses in the case, aiming to preserve evidence and prevent Ying from evading or obstructing the investigation.

The court concluded that less intrusive measures, such as bail, would not suffice to ensure the smooth progress of the prosecution process. The decision to reject Ying's appeal underscores the seriousness of the charges and the court's commitment to upholding justice in complex corruption cases.
