KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung City will give away 22,800 free saplings to residents at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday (March 12) across 38 district offices for Arbor Day. The saplings, featuring five varieties such as the Buddhist Pine (羅漢松) and Taiwan Zelkova (台灣欅), are part of an initiative encouraging citizens to actively participate in fostering a sustainable urban environment.
Highlighting the global significance of carbon reduction, the city's Agriculture Bureau (高雄市農業局) underscores the multifaceted benefits of tree planting. Beyond absorbing carbon, trees aid in water conservation and bolster biodiversity, contributing to an improved environmental quality by reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.
Residents can collect two saplings each without the need for identification, though they are advised to bring eco-friendly bags. Distribution is limited to 600 saplings per district office, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Additionally, the Yanqiao Deep Water Nursery (燕巢深水苗圃) will offer saplings during business hours. This nursery produces between 40,000 and 60,000 saplings annually to support both public and private reforestation projects. Citizens are entitled to five free saplings a year with ID, while organizations can apply for up to 50 saplings annually.
Kaohsiung's Arbor Day activities reflect a strong commitment to enhancing green spaces, aligning urban living with nature. These efforts not only raise environmental awareness but also provide a tangible step towards sustainability. With limited saplings available, residents are encouraged to participate early and contribute to the city's greener future.
