In his inauguration speech in May 2024, President Lai highlighted the Songshan Branch's pivotal contribution to Taiwan's "Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience" (全社會防衛韌性) strategy. He praised the institution's frontline response during both the SARS epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic, periods when the hospital demonstrated its vital importance to national health security. These past crises, Lai noted, have informed Taiwan's current approach to medical preparedness and underscored the necessity for specialized facilities capable of responding to large-scale health emergencies.
The new facility houses a specialized "Forward Surgical Team" at the Songshan Branch, designed to enhance survival outcomes for patients requiring emergency evacuation and immediate surgical intervention. President Lai commended the Ministry of National Defense (MND, 國防部) and the military medical corps for their efficiency in delivering the project within the planned timeframe. This unit represents a critical component in Taiwan's emergency medical response system, potentially saving lives through rapid deployment and specialized trauma care.
Beyond medical emergency preparedness, Lai announced that his administration has formed the "National Climate Change Countermeasures Committee" (氣候變遷對策委員會) to advance energy conservation and carbon reduction initiatives across Taiwan. He pointed to Chang Gung Hospital (長庚醫院) as an exemplary institution that has successfully implemented sustainable practices in healthcare operations.
