TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Sharp Corp. (夏普) announced on Wednesday (April 23) that it will transfer its semiconductor and laser businesses to its wholly owned subsidiary, Sharp Fukuyama Laser Co., Ltd. (夏普福山雷射), by late September. This move aligns with Sharp's strategy to transform into a brand-oriented company and focus resources on its core branding operations.
Hon Hai Precision Industry (鴻海) disclosed in the afternoon that its subsidiary, HonYuan International Investments Co., Ltd., will acquire all 1,200 shares of Sharp Fukuyama Laser for approximately NT$3.56 billion. Hon Hai emphasized that this investment aims to expand its business reach.
Sharp explained that the business transfer supports its mid-term operational plan, introduced in mid-May 2024, which includes asset-light strategies and enhancing headquarters functions. During discussions, Hon Hai's subsidiary proposed acquiring all of Sharp Fukuyama Laser's shares, as Sharp had been offloading key component businesses, including panels, semiconductors, and camera modules.
Chairman Young Liu (劉揚偉) of Hon Hai noted in late December 2024 that Sharp's divestment of these components presented an opportunity for Hon Hai to potentially take over Sharp's semiconductor business. As the deal progresses, industry observers will watch how this strategic shift impacts Sharp's brand focus and Hon Hai's business expansion.
