TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Lai Rui-long (賴瑞隆) won the Democratic Progressive Party's, DPP's, Kaohsiung mayoral primary by 0.61% Tuesday (Jan. 13), securing the nomination for Taiwan's second-largest city. The razor-thin margin represents one of the closest primary races in recent DPP history. Lai will face Kuomintang's, KMT's, Ke Chih-en (柯志恩) in the 2026 election.
Lai told supporters the primary represents one step in their collective effort for Kaohsiung. He emphasized his deep familiarity with municipal affairs, which distinguishes him from his opponent, Ke. Lai stated he has always been part of the Kaohsiung community, unlike his challenger.
Ke Chih-en acknowledged the upcoming battle and outlined his comeback strategy for the general election. KMT Kaohsiung City Councilor Pai Chiao-yin (白喬茵) questioned the results, suggesting they reflect phone mobilization rather than genuine support. The narrow margin may indicate divided sentiment within DPP ranks, according to opposition analysts.
Chiu I-ying (邱議瑩) and Hsu Chih-chieh (許智傑) placed second and third in the primary, respectively. Lin Tai-hua (林岱樺) finished last but pledged support for Lai, dispelling rumors of leaving the party. DPP spokesperson Han Ying (韓瑩) confirmed the Central Executive Committee, the party's top decision-making body, will approve Lai's nomination on Wednesday (Jan. 21).
Lai's strategy builds on current Mayor Chen Chi-mai's (陳其邁) achievements in concert economics and entertainment development. The Asia Bay 3.0 plan aims to enhance transportation infrastructure and attract major private investments. Industry observers view the concert economy as crucial for Kaohsiung's economic diversification beyond traditional heavy industry. ◼
