TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (外交部) confirmed on Tuesday (Jan. 20) the return of a Taiwanese citizen detained in the United Arab Emirates. Police at Abu Dhabi International Airport arrested the individual, surnamed Chen (), on Nov. 24 without providing a reason. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the citizen returned to Taiwan on Saturday (Jan. 17).

Spokesperson Hsiao Kuang-wei (蕭光偉) highlighted the ministry's commitment to protecting the rights of Taiwanese citizens abroad. He stated that Chen was released on Nov. 28, and after clarification by a commissioned lawyer, UAE police lifted his travel ban on Jan. 8. Hsiao emphasized that the ministry ensured the citizen's rights were upheld in compliance with local laws.

The Taipei Representative Office in Dubai also provided administrative assistance from the outset, accompanying the citizen to clarify the case with the authorities in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The office helped retrieve the individual's luggage at the airport on Dec. 12 and assisted in hiring a lawyer for legal proceedings on Dec. 17.

Due to the loss of Chen's passport by Abu Dhabi authorities, the office obtained a passport loss certificate on Jan. 14. They confirmed Chen's eligibility to leave on Jan. 15 and escorted him to the airport on the evening of Jan. 16 for his flight. Hsiao reiterated the ministry's dedication to safeguarding the rights of Taiwanese citizens traveling abroad while adhering to local regulations.
