TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Shin Kong Mitsukoshi (新光三越), a Taiwanese department store brand, saw a 13% decline in overall performance, media reported on Thursday (Jan. 22). This is due to a gas explosion at its Taichung location in February 2025, forcing the department store to close for 226 days. Xin-Yang Wu (吳昕陽), a spokesperson for the department store, said that the company anticipates a return to previous levels once the store reopens
The Tainan Xiaobeimen store opened last year, generating NT$10 billion in revenue within three months and attracting 2.5 million visitors. This success has fueled optimism for continued growth. Also, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi launched SKM MEN, a new venture focused on the menswear market, contributing to a 50% increase in customer visits.
The department store introduced a gold card service, which by Dec. 2025 had accumulated over 11,000 members. These members accounted for more than 20% of the company's overall revenue. Wu emphasized plans to enhance physical channels, digital experiences, ecosystem management, and sustainable governance in the future.
Digital tools such as SKM PAY, SKM POINT, and SKM MEDIA have seen membership numbers recently surpass 4.5 million, indicating a successful digital strategy. Wu stressed the importance of strengthening food safety, public safety, information security, and engineering safety going forward.
