YILAN (TVBS News) — Freezing temperatures hit Taipingshan in Yilan County late on Thursday (Dec. 21), with the mercury dropping to minus 6 degrees Celsius, marking Taipingshan's first snowfall of 2023.

The statue of an owl in Taipingshan was lightly covered with a sprinkle of white snow, adding a winter charm to the area.

Juan Ming-yang, director of the Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area Management Center, noted that although the winds were strong, the snowfall was not significant, and there was no observed increase in the trend of snowfall.

Despite nearly 1,000 tourists visiting the park during the day, the management began urging all visitors to descend the mountain from 4 p.m to avoid road ice that could trap tourists on the mountain.

Juan mentioned that there were tourists seeking snow experiences, opting for local accommodations. Both Taipingshan Village and Cueifong Villa, with a combined capacity of about 200 guests, are fully booked until Dec. 24, underscoring the enthusiasm for experiencing the snowfall.

For safety, Juan stated that there would be dynamic total volume control for vehicular entrance into the park. New vehicle entries would be halted once the number reaches the park limit of 1,000 vehicles until a sufficient number of vehicles exit the park. This decision is set to ensure the safety of all visitors amidst the snowfall event.
