TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As Taiwan prepares for the inauguration of President-elect Lai Ching-te (賴清德) on May 20, the spotlight also turns to his family, who will make their first public appearance during the ceremony.
Lai Ting-yu (賴廷與), Lai's elder son, is a distinguished graduate of National Cheng Kung University's Department of Electrical Engineering. He furthered his education in the United States, earning master's and doctoral degrees from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Washington, respectively.
Lai Ting-yen (賴廷彥), the younger son, completed his graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and works in Taiwan. Their academic and professional achievements highlight the family's commitment to education and public service.
Wu Mei-ju (吳玫如), Lai's spouse, has maintained a low profile throughout her husband's political career, appearing in public mainly during his mayoral and vice-presidential inauguration ceremonies. She retired early from Taiwan Power Company when Lai Ching-te was the Premier.
However, during Lai's presidential campaign, Wu took a more visible role by starring in a promotional advertisement, publicly supporting her partner for the first time.
