TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Over 40 civil groups gathered outside the Legislative Yuan on Tuesday (May 21) to demand the withdrawal of a bill proposed by the Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People's Party (TPP), advocating for procedural justice in the legislative process. The assembly, which lasted until midnight, saw an estimated turnout of over 30,000 people, highlighting the Taiwanese public's commitment to democratic principles and procedural fairness.

Prominent Figures Join the Protest

Among the supporters was Nymphia Wind, the winner of RuPaul's Drag Race, who made an appearance around 3 p.m. to back the protesters. Wind expressed her hope that the legislature would act in a manner that earns the people's respect and adheres to democratic procedures. Taipei City Councilor Miao Po-ya from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) also showed her support, criticizing the KMT and TPP legislators for their anti-reform actions under the guise of legislative reform.

Taiwanese democracy advocate Lee Ming-che, who was previously detained in China for five years due to his criticism of the Chinese government, joined the protest on Qingdao E. Rd. His presence underscored the deep-rooted desire for freedom of speech and human rights among Taiwanese citizens. Additionally, former Taipei City Councilor Chiu Wei-chieh, better known as Froggy, supported the civil groups, noting that the controversial Article 29 of the Law Governing the Legislative Yuan's Power had been passed by the legislature during the protest.

A Call for Democratic Integrity

The large-scale protest and the involvement of notable figures from various sectors reflect the broader concern over maintaining the integrity of Taiwan's democratic and legislative processes. As the debate over the proposed legislative reforms continues, the voices of thousands echo a clear message: the importance of procedural justice and respect for democratic principles in Taiwan.
