TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of National Defense announced on Thursday (May 23) that Taiwan has mobilized its naval, air, and ground forces in response to the People's Liberation Army's (PLA) two-day military drills around the island.

These drills, described by the PLA as "punishment" exercises against Taiwan independence movements, are seen as a direct challenge to Taiwan's sovereignty.

Eastern Theater Command spokesperson Li Xi (李熹) clarified that the drills from May 23 to 24 aim to penalize "Taiwan independence" separatist forces and serve as a stern warning to external entities that interfere or provoke.

Li detailed that the exercises would involve the PLA's Eastern Theater Command's army, navy, air force, and rocket force, spanning the Taiwan Strait and surrounding areas, including the islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu, and Dongyin.

The Ministry of National Defense expressed deep regret over the PLA Eastern Theater Command's decision to conduct military exercises around Taiwan, denouncing it as an irrational provocation that jeopardizes regional peace and stability.

The ministry criticized the PLA's ongoing harassment through the deployment of ships and aircraft, stating it significantly undermines global peace and stability.

Despite the PLA's aggressive posturing, the ministry assured the public that Taiwan's armed forces are fully prepared, adhering to the principle of "preparing for war without seeking it, and responding to war without avoiding it." The ministry remains confident in ensuring national security amidst these tensions.
