TAICHUNG (TVBS News) — China Medical University Hospital (CMUH, 中國醫藥大學附設醫院) opened the first Proton Therapy Center (質子治療中心) in central Taiwan on Wednesday (July 10) in Taichung City (台中). Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) attended the event to congratulate and thank Chairman Tsai Chang-hai (蔡長海) and his medical team for offering new hope to cancer patients.

The Proton Therapy Center, which cost nearly NT$5 billion to build, provides treatments for various cancers, including brain tumors, head and neck tumors, lung cancer, liver cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and pediatric cancers. The center operates from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., with an estimated capacity to treat 20 to 25 patients daily.

Tsai emphasized his commitment to patient-centered care, stating that establishing a proton therapy center in Taichung has been his long-held dream. The Health Bureau of Taichung City Government (台中市政府衛生局) expressed gratitude to CMUH and other local medical institutions for their contributions to the city's outstanding healthcare and public health services.

In 2024, Global Views Monthly (遠見雜誌) named Taichung the top-performing city among Taiwan's six major cities in its satisfaction survey, particularly highlighting its excellence in healthcare.

The new Proton Therapy Center marks a significant milestone in Taichung's medical landscape. It promises advanced treatments and better outcomes for cancer patients. As the center begins operations, the city anticipates further advancements and improvements in healthcare services.
