TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA, 經濟部) confirmed on Wednesday (Aug. 21) that Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will establish research and development (R&D) centers in Tainan and Kaohsiung. AMD plans to collaborate with local universities and industries to enhance R&D capabilities.

Minister J.W. Kuo (郭智輝) welcomed AMD's commitment to Taiwan during his meeting with David Wang (王啟尚), AMD's senior vice president. Kuo emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating that AMD's presence in Taiwan will enable Taiwan to continue advancing as an 'AI Silicon Island' (AI矽島) and play a vital role on the global stage.

Taiwan's robust semiconductor industry has attracted major AI chip manufacturers like NVIDIA and AMD to apply for R&D centers. In July, the MOEA approved AMD's application for the A+ Industrial Innovative R&D Program, which has a total budget of NT$8.64 billion, with the MOEA subsidizing approximately NT$3.3 billion.

The MOEA highlighted that AMD's collaboration with Taiwan represents a strong alliance, integrating local manufacturing capabilities with AMD's advanced technology. This partnership aims to maintain a competitive edge globally.

Kuo also introduced an international talent cultivation program to AMD, emphasizing the need to train domestic and international AI talent and strengthen cooperation with local universities. The AMD team expressed high interest in this initiative.

The establishment of these R&D centers marks a significant step for Taiwan to become a global leader in AI technology. The ongoing collaboration between AMD and Taiwan's tech ecosystem promises mutual benefits and sustained leadership in the competitive global market.
