TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Minister of Environment Peng Chi-ming (彭啓明) announced Friday (Sept. 6) that the government will implement a carbon fee in 2025.

Peng emphasized the urgency of finalizing the carbon fee price, which may require one or two more review meetings.

The fourth review meeting will convene on Sept. 9. Environmental groups advocate for a higher carbon fee, while economic departments argue for a lower price to ease industrial burdens. Peng noted the significant gap between the two sides' expectations.

The minister disclosed that proposals from environmental groups currently suggest a carbon fee ranging from NT$200 to NT$500. The Ministry of Environment (MOENV, 環境部) will ultimately decide the starting point.

Peng assured that industries could submit self-reduction plans and benefit from high carbon leakage coefficients to mitigate the policy's impact.

Peng stressed that the carbon fee is necessary. The economic department should consider assisting struggling enterprises affected by geopolitical challenges.
