TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) visited the Central Weather Administration (CWA, 中央氣象署) on Tuesday (Oct. 29) to propose an additional weather update at 9 p.m. This initiative aims to provide local governments with the latest information to make informed decisions regarding Typhoon Kong-Rey (康芮颱風), which is approaching Taiwan.

The CWA plans to issue a sea warning on Tuesday evening and a land warning between the morning and early hours of Wednesday. CWA Administrator Cheng Chia-ping (程家平) explained that the current protocol, based on guidelines from the Directorate-General of Personnel Administration, provides decision-making information to local governments by 7 p.m.

This year, the administration began a trial for coastal township wind forecasts, which, due to their complexity, require more time and manpower. Premier Cho suggested using 8 p.m. forecast data for the proposed 9 p.m. update. Cheng noted that, in response to the premier's recommendation, they will pilot the 9 p.m. update for Typhoon Kong-Rey.

Cheng explained that if the typhoon changes significantly, the 9 p.m. forecast will offer newer information; otherwise, it will be similar to the 7 p.m. data.

This new update aims to enhance the timeliness and accuracy of information available to local authorities. As Typhoon Kong-Rey approaches, the trial of this new update schedule could become a model for future weather events, potentially leading to more precise and timely decision-making.
