NANTOU (TVBS News) — A temple in Nantou initiated the "villain-hitting" (打小人) ancient ritual, or "petty person beating," on Wednesday (March 5) to help people dispel misfortune and welcome prosperity. The ceremony also marked the "Jingzhe - Awakening of Insects" (驚蟄), a Chinese solar term signifying the onset of spring.
Although this custom is less common in Taiwan than in Hong Kong, some locals are eager to try it, hoping to change their luck. Lin Ya-ling (林雅玲), a temple staff member, explained, "You can write down the person's name that affects your career or personal networks. We can help make them become a positive influence in your life."
Participants use wooden clogs to smash red paper symbolizing adversaries, a practice believed to drive away negativity. The temple charges NT$1,000 for the ceremony and offers a proxy service for those unable to attend in person. Participants can mail their clothes and personal details, and the temple records the ceremony and sends it back to the client.
The Jingzhe period is considered the optimal time to banish bad luck and alter one's energy field. As the event commenced, some individuals were already trying their luck. A participant who attended for two consecutive years shared hopes to enhance fortune and well-being.
