TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) on Friday (March 7) addressed concerns about Taiwan's defense budget, asserting the nation has made independent choices to strengthen its military capabilities. Speaking at the Legislative Yuan, Cho emphasized Taiwan's status as a sovereign nation, stating the government evaluates defense needs and financial health before purchasing advanced weaponry.
Following his delivery of a policy report, he clarified that Taiwan had not been asked by any country to buy arms and that the government chose to make the Republic of China a stronger nation. The premier's response was likely prompted by U.S. lawmakers' recent warning against defense budget cuts. He reiterated Taiwan's commitment to self-reliance in the face of China's threats.
Cho also expressed gratitude to international allies for their concern about security in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region and encouraged continued support and practical assistance for Taiwan's development.
