TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) highlighted Taiwan's unique military medical capabilities Tuesday (Aug. 19) during the official renaming ceremony for the National Defense Medical University (國防醫學大學), emphasizing how specialized trauma training strengthens national defense resilience. The president referenced Taiwan's peaceful decades since the Second Taiwan Strait Crisis as context for the institution's evolving mission. This ceremonial milestone underscores Taiwan's commitment to maintaining advanced medical preparedness amid regional security challenges.

President Lai emphasized the institution's distinctive position as Taiwan's only higher education facility integrating military operations with comprehensive medical training programs. The university operates a sophisticated Biosafety Level 4 Laboratory (BSL-4), one of the world's most secure research facilities, enabling critical contributions to public health research and infectious disease prevention efforts. This dual-purpose approach positions the institution as a cornerstone of both national defense and public health infrastructure.

The president stressed expanding international partnerships, particularly with the United States (美國), which maintains global leadership in trauma care expertise during Taiwan's extended peaceful period. Lai outlined three priority development areas for the university: enhanced medical services, strengthened infectious disease prevention capabilities, and advanced military medicine and trauma care training programs. He encouraged institutional leaders to share specialized knowledge and expertise across Taiwan's broader medical community.

The institution completed its transformation from the National Defense Medical College (國防醫學院) to university status on Aug. 1, marking a significant institutional upgrade that reflects Taiwan's enhanced commitment to defense medicine development. This name change represents more than administrative restructuring, symbolizing the nation's strategic investment in military medical capabilities and research infrastructure. The elevation demonstrates Taiwan's recognition of defense medicine as a critical component of comprehensive national security preparedness. ◼
