TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung City Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) showcased Taiwan's industrial port city's ambitious net-zero carbon reduction strategies Tuesday (Aug. 19) at a major sustainability summit, emphasizing collaborative efforts between local and central governments. The mayor outlined comprehensive achievements in environmental transformation while addressing implementation challenges that municipalities nationwide face in pursuing carbon neutrality goals. Chen's presentation aimed to inspire broader participation from cities and businesses across Taiwan in low-carbon initiatives essential for sustainable economic development.

Kaohsiung City Government announced that leading Taiwanese newspapers China Times (中國時報) and Commercial Times (工商時報) partnered with municipal authorities to organize the comprehensive forum focusing on urban development and industrial collaboration within net-zero frameworks. Chen presented compelling recent data demonstrating Kaohsiung's measurable carbon reduction progress during the opening ceremony, confidently asserting that current municipal strategies are producing effective results. The mayor emphasized how large corporations must spearhead the environmental transformation of Taiwan's crucial small and medium enterprises.

Mayor Chen emphasized that net-zero pursuits do not require eliminating specific industrial sectors but rather transforming them through sustainable practices and technological innovation. The mayor outlined his comprehensive approach addressing social sustainability challenges and ensuring just economic transitions while maintaining robust growth trajectories for the city. Chen highlighted how Kaohsiung's traditional heavy industries are successfully diversifying into cutting-edge sectors including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and Asian financial asset management centers. ◼
