TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taitung County, Taiwan's mountainous eastern coastal region, positioned itself as Asia's premier digital nomad destination during promotional presentations at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. Deputy Magistrate Wang Chih-hui (王志輝) showcased the county's pristine natural landscapes and relaxed lifestyle to international remote workers on Friday (Aug. 8). The ambitious initiative represents Taiwan's strategic effort to capture the rapidly expanding global digital nomad market through targeted international outreach.
The exposition drew officials from both nations, including Taiwan's National Development Council (國家發展委員會), the cabinet's economic planning agency, alongside Chihshang Township Office (池上鄉公所) and Taiwan Digital Nomad Association (台灣數位遊牧協會). Wang promoted Taitung's Pacific coastline, Central Mountain Range (中央山脈), natural hot springs, and seven Indigenous cultures as perfect attractions for remote workers. These diverse cultural and geographical features create an ideal environment for professionals seeking work-life balance.
Taitung County, Taiwan's government has established 60 bilingual-friendly stores and 44 multilingual information points to welcome international visitors. Wang emphasized ongoing promotion of the "Digital Nomad-Friendly Certification" (數位遊牧友善標章), designed to enhance local accommodations, co-working spaces, and living facilities. These comprehensive initiatives eliminate language barriers while seamlessly integrating international nomads into local communities through accessible bilingual services.
Taitung has welcomed international digital nomads for trial experiences since 2021, building momentum for long-term residency programs. The county launched TTNomad, a digital community platform in 2023, connecting remote workers with local businesses and cultural opportunities. Taiwan's National Development Council, the cabinet's planning agency, designated Taitung as the national model for digital nomadism, establishing a comprehensive service center at National Taitung University (台東大學).
