TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A ruling party legislator responded Tuesday (Sept. 9) to mounting speculation about former opposition leader Ko Wen-je's (柯文哲) potential bid for Kaohsiung mayor in 2026. Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) Legislator Lin Tai-hua (林岱樺) addressed questions surrounding the Taiwan People's Party (TPP, 民眾黨) former chairman's political future. The comments came amid intense political maneuvering in Taiwan's southern industrial hub.

Lin called for unity and compassion in Kaohsiung while urging residents to transcend partisan divisions that have plagued local politics. The legislator declared that Kaohsiung belongs to its citizens and championed developing three strategic industries: technology, defense, and energy sectors. Lin emphasized prioritizing residents' daily welfare over destructive political battles that often overshadow governance issues.

Lin addressed Ko's recent release by warning against transforming judicial proceedings into political weapons. President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) has pledged to end executive branch interference in Taiwan's court system, underscoring his commitment to comprehensive judicial reform. Lin pressed judicial authorities to implement the president's reform agenda rapidly while maintaining transparent communication with citizens about legal proceedings. ◼
