TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) confronted mounting global tariff challenges Wednesday (Sept. 10) at the semiconductor industry's premier exhibition opening. Cho emphasized the critical importance of Taiwan-U.S. partnerships and advocated for fair semiconductor tariffs during escalating trade tensions. The milestone 30th anniversary exhibition shattered attendance records with unprecedented participation from 56 countries, over 1,200 companies, and more than 4,100 booths showcasing cutting-edge technology.
Cho showcased Taiwan's semiconductor industry output reaching NT$5.3 trillion (around US$174.8 billion), expressing ambitious hopes to surpass NT$6 trillion (around US$197.9 billion). The Premier announced next year's central government budget exceeding NT$30 billion (around US$989 million) to advance Taiwan's top 10 AI construction projects. Cho outlined two transformative national goals: upgrading smart manufacturing industries through AI integration and creating comprehensive smart living networks for all citizens.
United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC, 聯華電子) President SC Chien (簡山傑) projected Taiwan's semiconductor industry will generate US$165.6 billion in total revenue during 2024, fueling sustained future growth. SEMI Global President and CEO Ajit Manocha declared the Taiwan Semiconductor Exhibition has evolved into a globally recognized industry connection platform, cementing Taiwan's position as the ecosystem's central hub.
