TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) convened its Election Strategy Committee Wednesday (Sept. 17) to accelerate mayoral candidate selection processes ahead of the Lunar New Year deadline. Senior Presidential Advisor Chiou I-jen (邱義仁) underscored the urgency of finalizing key decisions by afternoon, signaling the party's determination to streamline its electoral preparations. The meeting represents a critical juncture in the DPP's efforts to consolidate its political machinery for upcoming local elections.

Chiou outlined the committee's ambitious timeline to complete primary processes before the Lunar New Year, acknowledging that only select counties and cities present significant challenges. Committee member Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) confirmed the established schedule from previous meetings, emphasizing the critical need to evaluate diverse constituencies and coordinate support for incumbents approaching term limits or seeking re-election. The strategic approach reflects the party's methodical preparation for Taiwan's complex local political landscape.

Wang expressed optimism that expedited nominations would minimize internal party tensions and streamline the selection process. He acknowledged that certain political situations demand strategic timing, with the committee committed to conducting thorough district-by-district evaluations. Wang noted that while no exceptionally challenging constituencies have emerged yet, the party continues developing comprehensive talent recruitment strategies tailored to each district's unique political dynamics. ◼
