Economic ministry backs TSMC projects (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) clarified rumors Thursday (Sept. 18) that it halted plans for a second advanced packaging plant in Chiayi. Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Ho Chin-tsang (何晉滄) confirmed the ministry's commitment to supporting TSMC's local initiatives. The company stated its Chiayi plans remain unchanged despite speculation about redirecting resources to U.S. investments.

Ho addressed media inquiries about ongoing discussions with TSMC regarding equipment transfer to U.S. facilities. He expects TSMC to make a public statement soon regarding the matter. Market sources revealed TSMC is accelerating construction of its second and third Arizona plants, prioritizing relocation of Chiayi equipment to the U.S. operations.

Taiwan's electricity supply situation drew attention Tuesday (Sept. 17) as the operating reserve margin dropped to 3.8%. Ho assured that Taiwan Power Company (Taipower, 台電) has implemented measures to stabilize power supply. He expressed confidence that Linkou (林口) Power Plant's Unit 1 will return next week and Hsinta Power Plant's gas unit would help maintain 10% peak reserve during day and over 6% at night. ◼ (At time of reporting, US$1 equals approximately NT$30.095)
