TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taipei City Government (台北市政府) postponed the Taipei-Shanghai Twin-City Forum Monday (Sept. 22), canceling the Sept. 25 event at the last minute. Deputy Mayor Lin Yi-hua (林奕華) cited incomplete technical reviews and coordination assessments as primary reasons. The city government emphasized the need for thorough preparation before proceeding with the cross-strait diplomatic exchange.
Lin highlighted the forum as the only official cross-strait exchange platform, stressing the importance of comprehensive execution. She mentioned the need for additional preparation time that prompted the city government to postpone the event. Lin addressed public speculation about Mainland Affairs Council (MAC, 陸委會), Taiwan's cross-strait policy body, approval, clarifying that progress on two memorandums of understanding fell short of expectations. The city government submitted them about a month ago, but some ministries have not responded, with one MOU still under negotiation.
Lin emphasized complete readiness was necessary before proceeding, as both the council and public closely monitor MOU signings and forum outcomes. She assured the new date would be announced once confirmed. Lin noted sub-forums require further enhancement, with the Mainland Affairs Council requesting additional details on speakers, itinerary arrangements, and potential meetings with Chinese officials. Lin described these requests as routine requirements, not additional obstacles. ◼
