TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's military deployed a forward command post to Hualien Wednesday (Sept. 24) after Typhoon Ragasa severely impacted the eastern county. Army Vice Commander Chang Tai-sung (張台松) leads recovery operations as the military prepares comprehensive disaster assistance. The Ministry of National Defense (國防部) mobilized troops and equipment for immediate deployment.
The military established the 2nd Operations Zone Forward Command Post (前進指揮所) at Hualien Sugar Factory in Guangfu (光復糖廠) to coordinate recovery efforts. Officials emphasized maintaining close contact with local governments to ensure readiness amid potential heavy rainfall. The 2nd Operations Zone deployed 448 personnel earlier that day with 72 AAV vehicles, 29 3.5-ton trucks, and six engineering units.
General Mei Chia-shu (梅家樹), chief of the general staff, directed Army Command Headquarters to establish the forward command post Tuesday. The Ministry of National Defense (國防部) announced the deployment stands ready to assist local governments with post-disaster recovery tasks. Military forces will help affected residents restore their homes and return to normal life as quickly as possible. ◼
