TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's major rail operators are expanding services to handle massive holiday travel demand during the Moon Festival (中秋節) weekend. Taiwan High Speed Rail (台灣高鐵), the island's bullet train system, reports 544,000 tickets already booked starting Saturday (Oct. 4). The company anticipates peak southbound travel Friday (Oct. 3) afternoon and evening, with northbound traffic peaking Sunday (Oct. 6).

The high-speed rail system will expand non-reserved seating cars to nine on trains between Nangang (南港) and Taichung to serve short-distance travelers. During the holiday period, 24 trains will feature enhanced non-reserved seating capacity. This expansion specifically targets passengers traveling between stations north of Taichung, Taiwan's central hub.

Taiwan Railway Corp. (台鐵公司), the island's conventional rail network, will add six trains on Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 5-6), with reservations opening midnight Thursday (Oct. 2). The company will deploy four EMU3000 trains from Qidu to Changhua and two Taroko Express trains from Shulin (樹林) to Hualien Sunday (Oct. 6), adding 2,904 total seats. The coordinated rail expansion reflects Taiwan's preparation for one of its most significant holiday travel periods of the year. ◼
