TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei City mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) announced on Monday (Dec. 1) that the city has entered a super-aged society, with its elderly population surpassing 800,000, accounting for about 20% of the total population. This demographic milestone prompted the city government to host the "800,000 Silver Power Shines in New Taipei, Happy City Christmas Festival" (80萬銀力耀新北、幸福城市耶誕盛典) at the New Taipei City Civic Plaza.

The festival featured performances by senior citizens, intergenerational dances, and health-oriented activities. Hou noted the city's commitment to elderly care, stating that New Taipei has established 120 daycare centers, 633 community care points, and over 1,400 senior clubs. He expressed hope to increase the number of daycare centers to 130 next year while emphasizing the government's dedication to supporting senior citizens.

During the event, 15 departments, communities, and associations set up booths to engage the public with interactive experiences, games, and food. These activities aimed to educate attendees about age-friendly policies and available resources. Hou stressed the importance of enabling seniors to age and thrive in their communities, pledging continued efforts to advance learning and inclusive activities for the elderly.
