TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Fertilizer (台肥) announced on Friday (Jan. 2) its commitment to advancing carbon reduction technologies and optimizing manufacturing processes. The company plans to implement Kellogg Brown & Root's (KBR) three-stage carbon reduction technology, which promises over 95% reduction efficiency without compromising manufacturing efficiency. Taiwan Fertilizer aims to complete the installation of relevant equipment by the first quarter of 2028, demonstrating its dedication to climate action.
 

According to a press release, the company's Taichung plant received approval from the Ministry of Environment (MOE, 環境部) on Dec. 19, 2025, for its voluntary carbon reduction plan, securing a preferential carbon fee rate. The company states that this achievement positions Taiwan Fertilizer as a model for green transformation and that it actively aligns with the Ministry of Environment's three subsidiary laws on carbon fees, showcasing its proactive approach to environmental responsibility.
 

Taiwan Fertilizer highlighted that the MOE mandates carbon fees for industries with annual greenhouse gas emissions exceeding 25,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent. The Taichung plant, due to nitrous oxide (N₂O) byproducts in its nitric acid production process, is among the first in Taiwan to face the carbon fee challenge. The company explained that nitrous oxide significantly impacts global warming, with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) stating that each kilogram of N₂O is equivalent to 265 kilograms of CO2 emitted to the atmosphere.

 
 

To tackle this, Taiwan Fertilizer collaborates with domestic and international technology firms to reduce nitrous oxide emissions during manufacturing. The company is also developing low-carbon fertilizer products to support sustainable agriculture. This initiative underscores Taiwan Fertilizer's commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation in the face of climate challenges.
