TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taipei Blood Center (台北捐血中心) reported on Friday (Feb. 6) that fluctuating temperatures have led to a decrease in blood donations, leaving the center with only a four-day blood supply. The situation is critical, especially for blood types B and O, with supplies dwindling to four and 3.3 days, respectively.
The Taiwan Blood Services Foundation (台灣血液基金會) statistics reveal that the nationwide blood supply averaged 5.1 days on Friday (Feb. 6). The breakdown included 4.3 days for type O, 5.4 days for type A, 5.8 days for type B, and 6.5 days for type AB. Among the regions, Taipei faced the most severe shortage, with its blood bank supply barely covering four days.
The Hsinchu Blood Center (新竹捐血中心) reported a 7-day supply, while Taichung reported 4.3 days and Kaohsiung reported 5.9 days, indicating varied blood storage conditions across the country. The Taipei Blood Center emphasized that the demand for medical blood will not decrease during the Lunar New Year holiday, urging eligible citizens to donate blood actively.
Blood centers are urging for donations. To expand the blood donor pool, authorities have relaxed the age limit to 16-70 years old as of July 2, 2025. Donors over 65 must meet health standards and have a blood donation record within the last two years. The Taiwan Blood Services Foundation reminded donors aged 70 or older to obtain a physician's approval to ensure their health and safety.
