TAIPEI (TVBS News) — A northern rain front will bring scattered showers to Taiwan starting Thursday (May 21), the Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署) said. The weather agency forecasted cloudier skies and increased afternoon rainfall affecting areas from Taoyuan northward and mountainous regions from Hsinchu to Chiayi. Southwestern winds will push moisture across the island through the weekend.

The rain front will cause a shift to southwestern winds and increase afternoon rainfall, the Central Weather Administration said. The forecast indicated mostly cloudy to sunny weather across the island Thursday through Friday. Taoyuan, Taitung and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) face a higher chance of scattered showers during this period.

Southwestern winds will continue affecting Taiwan through the weekend, stabilizing weather conditions and reducing afternoon rainfall, the Central Weather Administration said. The forecast suggested mostly cloudy to sunny conditions island-wide Saturday through Sunday. Yilan (宜蘭), Hualien (花蓮) and northern mountainous regions could still see occasional local thunderstorms, according to the agency.

Weather forecasting company WeatherRisk (天氣風險) said the rain front will influence Taiwan starting Thursday. The southeastern region, Hengchun Peninsula and areas north of Taoyuan will experience scattered showers, the company said. WeatherRisk also warned of local thunderstorms in northern, eastern and mountainous areas through the period. Residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions.

Tropical disturbance 98W is moving northward, leading to reduced cloud cover near Taiwan and a shift to typical summer weather Thursday, according to weather service TyTech Taiwan Weather Express (台灣颱風論壇|天氣特急). Hot weather will persist for several more days. Afternoon thunderstorms remain possible, especially in mountainous areas, the service said. ◼
