Eyewear shops rake in profits as myopia becomes prevalent

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — At a compound eyewear store in Taipei, a barista adds the finishing touches to your latte while you browse through the extensive collection of eyewear at the counter. 

The scene described above actually takes place at one of the innovative eyewear stores in Taipei,  where the shop collaborates with other businesses.

 

It has become increasingly popular in recent years in Taiwan, setting them apart from traditional eyewear shops and boosting sales.

A staff member at one such store, Li Yun-chieh, remarked that the concept works as many customers who come to get their glasses often return later on to get a cup of coffee.

With the increasing dependence on electronic devices, nearsightedness (also known as myopia) has become a prevalent issue in the population. 
 

Reports indicate that around 13 million people in Taiwan are affected by nearsightedness, with those under 18 making up 85% of the cases.

In response to this demand, eyewear stores have opened more branches and are reaping significant profits.

Marketing expert Wu Yu-hung pointed out, "As franchises increasingly position eyewear as a luxury or fashion item, it aligns better with their brand and creates a more enduring appeal over time, ultimately expanding the market pie."

Eyewear stores are also adopting technology to enhance the customer experience as glasses increasingly become a fashion statement. 

Many now feature tablets that project the customer's face on a screen, enabling them to explore different frame options and view them from every angle.

In addition, the government's implementation of the "Optometric Personnel Act" mandates that all eyewear stores must have a certified optometrist on staff by 2026. 

The combination of these measures will create a professional and engaging environment for those seeking prescription glasses in the future.
