TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Tsai Ing-wen highlighted Taiwan's commitment to a free press and the defense of democratic values during the opening ceremony of the "World News Media Congress 2023" Wednesday (June 28).

In her address at the event held in Taipei, President Tsai noted that the presence of numerous international media professionals stationed in Taiwan in recent years has served as a testament to Taiwan's dedication to safeguarding media and freedom of speech. It also showcases Taiwan's strong emphasis on this vital pillar of democracy.

President Tsai stressed that the proliferation of misinformation has become one of the most challenging issues faced by democratic nations. With the rise of artificial intelligence, false information spreads at an unprecedented speed, making it increasingly difficult to counter. The question is how to combat misinformation dissemination while upholding freedom of speech, she explained.

Democratic countries face limitations in countering misinformation due to concerns of infringing on freedom of speech. President Tsai stressed the need to respect the people's rights and allow them to decide whether to believe specific information. Taiwan has developed methods to combat misinformation and continues to share its experiences with international partners.

To ensure the effectiveness of countering misinformation, President Tsai highlighted the importance of regular press conferences by government institutions and immediate public dissemination of official clarifications. Transparency and timeliness are crucial in this endeavor.

President Tsai noted that Taiwan collaborates with neighboring countries and democratic partners to maintain regional security and prevent armed conflicts in the Taiwan Strait, East China Sea, and South China Sea. She reassured that Taiwan seeks peaceful coexistence based on principles of peace, stability, predictability, and mutual benefit, firmly rejecting any military confrontation.

As President Tsai addressed the global audience at the conference, her message underscored Taiwan's unwavering commitment to a free press, countering misinformation, and maintaining regional stability.
