TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In the early hours of Wednesday (Dec. 6), the Yushan Weather Station recorded a chilling temperature of minus 6.6 degrees Celsius amid dense fog with visibility down to just 50 meters.

Coupled with the cold spell, the Central Weather Bureau (CWA) announced the appearance of rime ice on the north peak of Yushan.

As temperatures remain below freezing on Yushan, there is potential for more rime ice formations, the CWA said, adding that the region could continue to experience below-freezing temperatures.

The CWA announced due to the impact of the northeast Monsoon, which brings moisture in following an eastward drift from the south coast of China, heavy rainfall is expected in the northern and central mountainous areas, as well as in the Yilan-Hualien region.

Snowfall is likely to appear above 3,500 meters in the central mountain ranges as the monsoon strengthens, according to CWA.

As the cold air mass intensifies, daytime temperatures in northern Taiwan are hovering around 20 degrees Celsius, with a predicted drop to 15 to 16 degrees at night. In regions outside the north, nighttime temperatures are expected to range between 17 and 20 degrees.
