TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kuomintang's (KMT) vice presidential candidate Jaw Shaw-kong proposed on Wednesday (Dec. 20) that Taiwan positions itself as a leader in artificial intelligence (AI) by adopting AI as its next "silicon shield."

During an AI policy press conference, Jaw advocated for the creation of an "AI Minister" role within various ministries, including the Ministry of National Defense (MND) and the Executive Yuan.

Jaw, known for implementing the real-price registration system and the Invoice Guardian app, questioned the government's AI legislation plans, pushing for stronger policy frameworks.

Acknowledging the rapid progress in AI technology and its ethical implications, Jaw called for a foundational AI law to address future challenges. He commended the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company for its contributions and emphasized the importance of U.S. trust in Taiwan for AI tech development.

In conclusion, Jaw urged the government to support academic and corporate AI research, citing potential benefits for military efficiency, a crucial aspect given Taiwan's limited armed forces personnel.
