TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Changhua County Fire Bureau reported 53 emergency medical cases within the last 24 hours as of 8 am on Thursday (Dec. 21), including five instances of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA).

The increase in medical emergencies coincides with a sudden drop in temperatures due to an extreme cold wave in Taiwan. The OHCA victims, aged between 65 and 87, predominantly exceeded 70 years. The exact causes of these incidents remain undetermined.

While the overall emergency case count matches the daily average of 54, the number of non-responsive patients has risen from three to five. Given these circumstances, the the fire bureau advises older adults, individuals with cardiovascular conditions, and those vulnerable to cold weather to dress warmly to prevent discomfort.

In response to the alarming surge in OHCA cases, the Changhua County Public Health Bureau urges anyone experiencing symptoms like shortness of breath, chest tightness, or breathing difficulties to seek immediate medical attention.
