Global experts discuss sustainable ecosystems at SCSE 2024

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Smart City Summit and Expo (SCSE), which kicked off on Tuesday (March 19), has emerged as a significant platform for Taiwan in its quest to combat climate change, with the island nation setting its sights on achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. 

This lofty ambition was at the heart of discussions throughout the summit, drawing leaders and experts from a variety of fields and governmental organizations to deliberate on ways to turn cities into sustainable ecosystems. The summit underscored the urgent need for joint efforts and innovative solutions to tackle the severe challenges posed by climate change.

 

In a noteworthy address at the summit, James Liao, the President of Academia Sinica, presented a talk entitled "Science and Technology Approaches to Achieving Net Zero Emission in Taiwan."

Liao pinpointed clean energy generation as a critical component in reducing emissions, with electricity production being identified as the major emission source in Taiwan. He also spoke about the current initiatives to eliminate the use of coal.

Moreover, Langdon Morris, Leader and Senior Partner at Innovation Labs LLC, stressed the critical role of data in surmounting energy challenges. Morris highlighted the necessity of exhaustive data gathering and analysis across different sectors to craft effective strategies for steering the shift toward sustainability.
 

The collaborative spirit between academic circles and industry pioneers was a recurring motif in the discussions, illustrating the importance of uniting diverse expertise to foster significant change.
