TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Vice President Lai Ching-te attended the 2024 Taiwan International Machine Tool Show on Thursday (March 28), praising Taiwan's machine tool industry for its continuous pursuit of technological innovation and transformation. He emphasized the government's commitment to working with industry players toward the goals of net-zero and digital transformation.

Lai noted that Taiwan is one of the few countries globally capable of producing high-end machine tools. The annual Taiwan International Machine Tool Show brings together upstream, midstream, and downstream players in Taiwan's machinery industry, showcasing the country's comprehensive machine tool industry.

The machine tool industry plays a crucial role in Taiwan's economic development. Known worldwide for its customized and flexible services, Taiwan boasts a rare 60-kilometer-long "Golden Valley" of machine tools.

In recent years, the government has been promoting Taiwan as a high-end machine tool manufacturing country. Amid geopolitical changes and global supply chain restructuring, it hopes to rebuild a reliable supply chain with democratic allies.

The Executive Yuan has proposed a roadmap for net-zero transformation by 2050. With the assistance of Shen Jong-chin, a senior adviser to the president, carbon footprint verification (CFV) will be conducted across all industries to drive the commitment to carbon reduction and achieve the national goal of net-zero transformation.

During his tenure, Vice President Lai has also proposed an artificial intelligence (AI) action plan. He hopes that Taiwan's AI industry can be industrialized, attracting international companies to invest and conduct research and development in Taiwan. The development of AI is expected to be applied across all industries, especially small and medium-sized enterprises and the manufacturing industry.
