KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai announced on Friday (March 29), that the city's water situation is currently stable, with the flow rate of the Gaoping River at about 8 to 9 cubic meters per second, slightly higher than the same period last year.

He added that none of the city's 110 drought-resistant wells have been used so far, and adjustments will be made according to the water situation.

Chen made the remarks before attending the opening of the third regular meeting of the fourth session of the Kaohsiung City Council.

He noted that Kaohsiung uses about 1.5 million tons of water daily, of which 800,000 tons are surface river water, and subterranean water also provides a stable supply of about 320,000 tons.

Kaohsiung draws water from the Jiasian District river dam to the Nanhua Reservoir for storage. Last year, it added about the equivalent of two Nanhua Reservoirs' worth of water.

The connection project of the Tsengwen Reservoir should be completed by the end of March this year, and the water situation in Kaohsiung has been stable so far this year.

Kaohsiung's drought measures are more than sufficient, with subterranean water design reaching 800,000 tons, and drought-resistant wells can increase by about 300,000 to 350,000 tons.

Under central government subsidies, the Kaohsiung City Government has built embankments in the Laonong River channel to store water, enhancing the Laku Laku ("Laonong") River's drought resistance and effectively replenishing the groundwater resources of the Gaoping River basin.

It can store about 350,000 tons and is expected to be completed soon.
