TAIPEI (TVBS News) — On Tuesday (April 30), Taiwanese Vice President Lai Ching-te, met with a delegation led by Takako Suzuki, the director of the Youth Division of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation for economic development and regional peace.

This meeting underscores the shared democratic values and the desire for deeper ties between Taiwan and Japan amid rising regional challenges.

Bilateral Relations and Shared Values

Vice President Lai emphasized the shared values of democracy, freedom, and human rights between Taiwan and Japan.

He expressed hope for enhanced cooperation to deepen the bonds between the people of the two nations in the face of rising regional hegemony and the challenges of globalization.

Suzuki, visiting Taiwan for the first time with the delegation, thanked Vice President Lai for the warm reception and expressed her anticipation for a more robust Taiwan-Japan relationship in the future.

Gratitude and Support

Representing the Taiwanese government and its people, Vice President Lai thanked Japan for its donation of COVID-19 vaccines and its swift response and support following the Hualien earthquake on April 3.

Suzuki also highlighted that the LDP Youth Division’s donation for the earthquake relief came from local groups and governments across all 47 prefectures of Japan, showcasing Japan’s nationwide support for Taiwan.

The delegation, including Japanese senators, members of the House of Representatives, and representatives from the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association’s Taipei office, demonstrated the depth of Taiwan-Japan exchanges and cooperation.

This meeting not only reaffirms the strong ties between Taiwan and Japan but also sets the stage for future collaboration aimed at fostering economic growth and ensuring regional stability. As both nations face global and regional challenges, their continued partnership becomes ever more crucial.
