TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Hsiao Bi-khim was inaugurated as the 16th-term vice president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on Monday (May 20), vowing to protect the Constitution and the interests of Taiwanese people both domestically and internationally.

According to the Constitution, her role includes assuming the presidency if the president is unable to fulfill his duties. Following past practices, she will work on tasks assigned by the president and share social responsibilities, such as visiting Taiwan's diplomatic allies.

As Taiwan's first female representative to the United States, she acted as a bridge between Taipei and Washington from July 2020 to November 2023. She is expected to continue reinforcing that bilateral relationship.

Based on her experience as a legislator from 2002 to 2008 and again from 2012 to 2020, Hsiao will likely continue to advocate for women's rights, gender equality, and animal rights during her tenure. With her dedication to Hualien County, especially after the April 3 earthquake, she has been actively supporting reconstruction efforts and is likely to continue doing so.

Her unique background, political experience, and outgoing personality are expected to redefine the vice president's role in Taiwan.
