TAIPEI (TVBS News) — To integrate digital literacy and artificial intelligence (AI) into Taiwan's education system, Minister of Education Cheng Ying-yao (鄭英耀) announced plans on Monday (May 27) to potentially adjust the curriculum to include AI and other digital capabilities. This initiative aims to prepare the next generation for AI technologies' challenges and opportunities.

Curriculum Overhaul and Teacher Training

Cheng revealed that the Ministry of Education is set to complete the new digital teaching guidelines for primary and secondary schools (中小學數位教學指引3.0) by October. These guidelines will cover digital literacy, the risks associated with AI use, and principles for using generative AI as a teaching aid.

Additionally, the ministry will organize AI-related training sessions and systematically plan AI courses to assist teachers in preparing lessons. Cheng emphasized the importance of enhancing teachers' technological literacy and integrating technology into teaching methods.

Listening to the Community
The minister also highlighted the strategy of rooting the basics in primary and secondary education, promoting interdisciplinary learning in universities, and enhancing AI literacy among the general public. By collaborating with the industry and combining public and private efforts, the ministry plans to organize technology education AI application competitions to promote AI literacy and skills broadly.

Cheng also stressed the value of listening to the input of the wider community, including parents and teachers, in shaping the future curriculum.

This educational reform represents a proactive approach to equipping Taiwan's students and teachers with the necessary skills to navigate the rapidly evolving digital landscape. By fostering a solid foundation in AI and digital literacy, Taiwan aims to stay at the forefront of technological innovation and prepare its citizens for the future.
