TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Aghon (Ewiniar, 艾維尼), the first typhoon of the year, was upgraded to a moderate typhoon at 8 a.m. on Monday (May 27), setting its course towards Japan.

The Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署, CWA) has announced that while Typhoon Aghon will not directly impact Taiwan, residents along the Keelung northern coast, the eastern half of the island, Lanyu (蘭嶼), Green Island (綠島), and the Hengchun Peninsula (恆春半島) should be wary of high waves and exercise caution during coastal activities.

Currently, Typhoon Aghon is located at 15.8 degrees north latitude and 122.8 degrees east longitude, moving northeast at a speed of 14 kilometers per hour.

With maximum wind speeds near its center reaching 33 meters per second and gusts up to 43 meters per second, the typhoon boasts a radius of 120 kilometers for winds of force 7 and a radius of 40 kilometers for winds of force 10.

The CWA has noted that Aghon is approximately 700 kilometers south-southeast of Cape Eluanbi (鵝鑾鼻) and is expected to continue moving northeast and intensify. However, its impact on Taiwan's weather will be minimal, with this week's rainfall primarily caused by a frontal system.

The CWA's warning serves as a reminder for those in affected areas to remain vigilant against the potential dangers posed by long waves. As Typhoon Aghon progresses, residents and visitors to the specified regions are advised to stay informed on the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during coastal activities.
