NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — New Taipei City Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) unveiled an ambitious plan on Monday (Dec. 2) to expand the city’s network of senior care centers to 130 by 2026. This initiative aims to provide comprehensive support for the medical, leisure, and health needs of the elderly population. With Taiwan on the verge of becoming a super-aged society, discussions on ensuring a fulfilling life for seniors are increasingly urgent.
Mayor Hou emphasized that the city has already established 108 daycare centers for seniors, surpassing its original target for 2025, highlighting a strong commitment to enhancing the quality of life for the 760,000 residents aged 65 and older. Hou emphasized the importance of seniors living joyfully and participating in societal activities, calling it a" truly wonderful thing." He reiterated the city's goal to support seniors in aging in place.
The city government hosted a "100 Daycare Centers Elderly Fashion Party" (百家日照中心長者時尚PARTY) on the same day, inviting seniors, their families, and various service units. The event featured seniors dressed in their favorite outfits, confidently walking the runway, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Hou expressed his emotions, stating, "Seeing the seniors happily walking the runway is touching. They participate with healthy bodies and joyful hearts, showcasing the confidence, health, and happiness of the elderly."
The New Taipei City Department of Health (新北市衛生局) highlighted the centers' well-planned facilities, including activity and entertainment spaces, handicrafts, and rehabilitation exercise areas. Professional nurses and social workers provide daily care, health checks, and enriching physical and mental activities for seniors.
